Choosing an Operating System for Your Shades

Today’s window shade operating systems vary from standard cord designs to cordless operating options to complete motorization. Each operating system has a unique design to control opening and closing of the shades, as described below. Classic Window Coverings has an expansive showroom that allows you to see, feel and operate all of the Hunter Douglas operating systems so you can determine which one would work best for your shades in Bend, Oregon!

Standard Cordlock

The standard cordlock is the original operating system from Hunter Douglas for most window shades. This operating system works by using a long cord and a locking mechanism to open and close the shade. As an added safety feature, the standard cordlock is equipped with cord cleats to keep the cord out of the reach from children and pets. The standard cordlock is available with a few of the Hunter Douglas shades, including honeycomb shades and woven wood shades.

Similar to the standard cordlock, the clutch operates using a beaded cord loop to effortlessly raise and lower the shades. To raise the shades, pull down the back half of the loop, and to lower the shades, pull down the front half of the loop. The clutch is available with Hunter Douglas roller shades and woven wood shades.

The EasyRiseTM operates essentially the same way as the clutch with a single loop that opens or closes the shades by pulling on the cord. This operating system can be used with Hunter Douglas sheers and shadings, honeycomb shades, roman shades or woven wood shades.

Wand Control

The wand control operating system replaces cords and looped cords entirely with a traveling wand. The single wand system controls the opening and closing of the shades and rotation of vertical blinds. The wand control is an upgraded safety feature for homes with children or pets because it is kept out of the way at all times. Hunter Douglas sheers and shadings, roller shades and woven shades can all be equipped with wand control.

The SkyLiftTM operating system is designed specifically for honeycomb shades in skylights with a manual hand crank or telescoping wand to operate hard to reach windows, similar to the wand control operating system.

The UltraGlide® and the UltraGlide® 2 use a constant length retractable cord mechanism to raise and lower the shade by gently pulling the cord. The UltraGlide® 2 has an additional feature that allows the shades to slowly close by themselves. These operating systems are available with Hunter Douglas honeycomb shades, roman shades, roller shades, woven wood shades, and sheers and shadings.

Another cordless operating system is the LiteRise® system, which allows you to raise or lower the blinds by simply pushing or pulling on the shades. This revolutionary technology keeps the blinds right where you put them without any adjustments required. The cordless design has increased safety for children and pets. Honeycomb shades, roman shades, woven wood shades, sheers and shadings from Hunter Douglas work well with this operating system.

The VertiglideTM uses a vertical pleat and fold system to open or close the blinds, which is ideal for side openings, glass doors or room dividers. This operating system is available with Hunter Douglas honeycomb shades or roman shades.

PowerViewTM Motorization

For completely automated window shade operation, Hunter Douglas offers PowerViewTM Motorization. This system can be controlled using a remote or a smartphone app to automatically open and close your shades from anywhere in the world. The PowerViewTM Motorization system is easily installed and operated with honeycomb shades, roman shades, roller shades, woven wood shades, sheers and shadings.
